Our Story
Heading 1
Meet the heart of our experience: The Mamas.
These 40 incredible women are the keepers of Zanzibar’s culinary heritage. Each brings their own story, strength, and warmth into the kitchen—and into every dish. By cooking with them, you’re not just learning how to make traditional Swahili meals—you’re making a real impact.
Your visit helps these women support their families, build independence, and lead change in their communities. What began as a way to share recipes has grown into a powerful platform for opportunity, pride, and cultural preservation.
When you join The Mamas in their kitchen, you become part of something bigger: A celebration of heritage. A ripple of empowerment. A connection that lasts long after the meal is over.
Spending time with the Mamas is not something you simply watch, it’s something you step into. You’ll find yourself in a real Zanzibari home, cooking side by side, learning without pressure, and sharing moments that feel natural, not arranged.
What guests often don’t expect is how quickly it all shifts—you arrive curious, but somewhere between the spices, the stories, and the laughter, you begin to feel at ease. Conversations flow, hands get involved, and the experience becomes less about “doing” and more about being present. Many guests arrive as visitors and leave feeling like they’ve shared something real with people, not just taken part in an activity. When you leave you will have more than recipes—you leave with a deeper understanding of Zanzibar, meaningful human connection, and a memory that feels personal, not just a packaged.
What You’ll Experience:
-
Authentic Swahili culture, far beyond the touristy trail
-
A home-cooked meal in a real Zanzibari home, made side by side with the Mamas
-
Warm, genuine connection — through food, stories, and laughter
-
The joy of knowing your visit directly empowers women, supports local families, and helps preserve Zanzibar’s rich cultural traditions

How it Started
At the heart of Mamas of Zanzibar is Maskat, our founder — a proud Zanzibari woman and a devoted single mother of three. After rebuilding her life following a difficult divorce, she transformed a deeply personal new beginning into a powerful vision for her community.
Her vision is simple yet powerful: to preserve Zanzibar’s rich culinary heritage, champion women-led cultural experiences, and create meaningful connections for travelers seeking authenticity.
Today, her initiative empowers more than 40 local women — the island’s true keepers of tradition. Through every experience, these women share their knowledge, recipes, stories, and way of life with visitors from around the world. Each booking directly supports the women involved, providing essential daily income that helps them care for their families, pay for their children’s schooling, put food on the table, and maintain safe and comfortable homes.
But the impact reaches even further. Every booking supports not only the 40 women but also the wider community. Local farmers, fishermen, spice growers, and market vendors all benefit from the experiences, creating a sustainable circle of opportunity that strengthens the local economy and protects Zanzibar’s cultural traditions.
Maskat believes travel can be truly transformative — not only for visitors, but for the women who lead these experiences. Every journey becomes a partnership: you learn, you taste, you discover. Together, we sustain traditions, empower women, and honor the spirit of our island.
With Maskat guiding the way, you don’t just visit Zanzibar — you live it, taste it, and carry its stories with you long after you leave.

What we offer
Heritage You Can Feel. Cuisine You Can Taste. Connections That Last.
This isn’t your typical tour. It’s a doorway.
A doorway into the real Zanzibar—beyond guidebooks and resorts—into the Swahili kitchen, the Jikoni, where tradition lives, spices crackle, and stories are passed from one generation to the next.
You’ll be welcomed into the homes of Zanzibar’s heritage keepers—the Mamas—who open their kitchens and hearts to share not just recipes, but a way of life. Together, you’ll cook traditional Swahili dishes, pick fresh ingredients from local markets, and experience the warmth of true community. And somewhere between peeling, stirring, tasting, and laughing, you stop feeling like a guest and start feeling present. There’s no pressure to perform or observe—just a natural rhythm of cooking, conversation, and connection.
This is what today’s travelers are really seeking—meaningful connection, cultural depth, and the feeling of being part of something real.
It’s more than food. It’s a cultural and community experience that supports local women, sustains heritage, and stays with you long after the spices fade.
Come curious. Come hungry. Leave full—in every sense of the word.

We’re so happy you’re here!
We welcome you into our world — a group of women founded by Maskat, a proud Zanzibari woman and a single mother of three. After rebuilding her life following her difficult divorce, she transformed a personal new beginning into a powerful vision for her community. She gathered the women around her — neighbors, each carrying generations of heritage in their hands. With years of hospitality experience and a deep love for her culture, she brought together her neighbors to share the island’s true essence with the world. Together, we opened our doors to share the true spirit of our island.
Here, food is not just food. It is memory. It is identity. It is connection.
We are honored you are here, and we open our homes for you to sit with us, cook with us, and walk with us. Discover Zanzibar the way we live it.
