Meet The Heritage Keepers of Zanzibar

A story of resilience, culture, and connection.

From Our Homes to the World

Heritage. Cuisine. Connections.

How  It Started

A journey of resilience, purpose, and connection. Mamas of Zanzibar began with a single story—Maskat’s.A proud woman from Zanzibar and a devoted mother, she found herself rebuilding her life after a difficult chapter. What began as a personal turning point became something far greater: a vision to create opportunity while preserving the traditions she had grown up with.

Having spent over 15 years in the hospitality industry, Maskat understood that while many travelers experienced the beauty of Zanzibar, they rarely connected with its true essence. The real stories—the kitchens, the women, the everyday life—remained unseen. She set out to change that. Her vision is simple yet powerful: to preserve the island’s rich culinary heritage, champion women-led cultural experiences, and create meaningful connections for travelers seeking something real.

What began as one woman’s idea has grown into a community of over 40 women—each one sharing her knowledge, her home, and her story. Every experience not only supports these women, but also a wider network of local farmers, fishermen, spice growers, and market vendors, creating a sustainable circle that strengthens both community and culture.

At its heart, Mamas of Zanzibar is about connection.

Maskat believes that travel can be transformative—not only for those who visit, but for the women who lead these experiences. Each journey becomes a shared exchange: you learn, you taste, you discover. And in doing so, you become part of something greater—helping sustain traditions, empower women, and honor the spirit of the island.

With her vision guiding the way, you don’t simply visit Zanzibar—you live it, you feel it, and you carry its stories with you long after you leave.

Here is

What We Offer

Heritage You Can Feel. Cuisine You Can Taste. Connections That Last.

This isn’t your typical tour. It’s a doorway.

A doorway into the real Zanzibar—beyond guidebooks and resorts—into the Swahili kitchen, the Jikoni, where tradition lives, spices crackle, and stories are passed from one generation to the next.

You’ll be welcomed into the homes of Zanzibar’s heritage keepers—the Mamas—who open their kitchens and hearts to share not just recipes, but a way of life. Together, you’ll cook traditional Swahili dishes, pick fresh ingredients from local markets, and experience the warmth of true community.  And somewhere between peeling, stirring, tasting, and laughing, you stop feeling like a guest and start feeling present.

There’s no pressure to perform or observe—just a natural rhythm of cooking, conversation, and connection. This is what today’s travelers are really seeking—meaningful connection, cultural depth, and the feeling of being part of something real.

It’s more than food. It’s a cultural and community experience that supports local women, sustains heritage, and stays with you long after the spices fade.Come curious. Come hungry. Leave full—in every sense of the word.
